Dr. Christian Hermansen at Insects to Feed the World 2024
19 Jun 2024

SIFBI, represented by Dr. , proudly participated in the recent 2024 conference held in Singapore, 19-22 June 2024. This event brought together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to discuss the potential of insects as a sustainable and nutritious food source.
Dr. Christian Hermansen, team lead for Circular Bioeconomy, was part of the organizing committee and presented on the topic of "Fermentation Pre-treatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass for Black Soldier Fly Feed Production." He developed innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective feed for black soldier flies, a promising insect species for protein production.
Food waste can be pre-treated using fermentation to improve nutritional value for Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). Further improvement in biomass conversion efficiency could enable the use of low-cost substrates for commercial BSFL rearing.
SIFBI is exploring innovation in Circular Bioeconomy as part of the solution to global food security challenges. We believe that insects offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to produce high-quality protein for both human consumption and animal feed.
